Dahlia Varieties

 I used to grow over 400 dahlia varieties in my display gardens. In 2021 I curated down to about 250 varieties which produce beautiful cut flowers and am doing the same in 2023. It was hard to say goodby to some old friends but I know if I miss them too much, I can replant in the future! With limited space, I want to grow those I love in higher quantities and still experiment with new varieties - like the beauties Bloomquist Ginnie, Persian Carousel and Fairy Wings, for example.

Customers always ask me about my favorites. That list is somewhat fluid but a few of my true loves are Ferncliff Fuego, Jowey Winnie, Shea’s Rainbow, Bumble Rumble, Hollyhill Monet, Keith H., Valentino, Skipley’s Spot of Gold and the wonderful Rae Ann’s Gemini.

All varieties are available for cut stems when the farm’s u-pick gardens open in late summer. Cash and carry bouquets are always available at the farmstand, starting in late August.

If you are searching for a particular variety to cut for an event such as a wedding, please contact me. I offer private cutting appointments for bridal parties, floral designers, garden clubs and event planners.

Many dahlia farms are commercial endeavors with broad business plans. At Frog Hollow, I focus on curating display gardens for the public. Selling cut flowers enables me to explore the diverse world of dahlias, experiment with seedlings, and share my passion with other dahlia lovers. I hope you’ll visit this summer!
